Choosing the Right After-School Activities: A Parent’s Perspective

When I think back on my time as an educator, some of the most meaningful connections I’ve made with students weren’t in the classroom. They happened on the basketball court, during badminton matches, or while setting up microphones and projectors in the audio-visual club. Extracurricular activities have always been more than just a job or a duty for me—they’ve been a chance to build relationships, discover students’ untapped potential, and share my own passions in ways that go beyond lesson plans.

Choosing the right after-school activities for your child is more than just filling their time after school. It’s about finding opportunities that let them grow, explore, and connect.

A Teacher’s Perspective: Beyond the Classroom

Over the years, I’ve coached basketball, volleyball, badminton, flag football, and even softball. Each sport brought a different dynamic and different kinds of students, but the core experience was always the same—bonding with kids outside the structured boundaries of the classroom. I also ran the audio-visual club, where I worked with students who might not have felt at home on a sports field but shone behind the scenes, running events and mastering technology with quiet confidence.

What I’ve loved most about leading these activities is the chance to see students in a completely different light. The shy, quiet student in your science class becomes the vocal leader of the volleyball team. The student who struggles to focus during a lesson suddenly transforms into a meticulous and dedicated AV tech. These moments are where growth happens. They reveal the layers of personality and capability that don’t always come out during the school day.

Most teachers I know are just as enthusiastic about running after-school programs. It’s an opportunity to share a part of themselves they don’t often get to show—whether it’s a love for sports, a knack for robotics, or a passion for theater. And in doing so, they create spaces where students feel seen, challenged, and supported in new ways.

As parents, it’s easy to think of after-school programs as convenient ways to keep kids occupied until they can be picked up. I’ll admit, I understand the practicality of that mindset. Life is busy, and finding something for your child to do after 3 p.m. can feel like ticking another box on a long to-do list.

But when approached thoughtfully, these programs can be so much more than that. They’re not just a stopgap; they’re a chance for your child to discover something new, build confidence, and develop skills that will serve them for a lifetime.

Ask your child how it’s going—what they’re enjoying, what’s challenging them, and what they’re learning. These conversations can help you gauge whether the activity is a good fit and give you a glimpse into their world outside the home.

It’s also an opportunity to celebrate their growth. Whether they’re scoring their first basket, mastering a tricky new skill, or simply finding joy in the activity, acknowledging these moments reinforces their sense of accomplishment and confidence.

What makes after-school programs truly special is how rewarding they can be for everyone involved. For students, they’re a chance to grow in ways that can’t always happen in a classroom. They learn about teamwork, leadership, and perseverance—not through lectures or assignments, but by living it.

For teachers, these programs offer a different kind of fulfillment. I’ll never forget the moments when a student finally nailed a volleyball serve after weeks of trying, or when a quiet AV club member confidently ran an entire school assembly. Those are the moments that stick with you, reminding you why you became an educator in the first place.

And for parents, after-school activities offer the joy of seeing your child discover new passions and capabilities. They’re also an opportunity to witness their growth in ways that might surprise you.
